· Be flexible.

·
Allow time for your Au Pair to settle in before expecting her to be  an immediate
   help.

·
Make your Au Pair feel welcome. If she doesn’t, she will feel like leaving soon and
coming back home. Au Pairs tend to feel insecure at first.

·
It would be nice if you suggest her to call home after arrival to let her family knows
she has arrived safely. This will probably break the ice.

·
Remember how difficult this new life might be for your Au Pair (new family, house,
costumes, culture, food etc.).  If this is the first time you are a Host Family it can also
   be difficult for you.

· Go with your Au Pair around the local area until she is familiar with it .

·
Talk to your Au Pair and allow her to talk to you as well.

·
Talk to her clear and slowly, remember that is probably she had learned your
language with a non native teacher.

·
Treat your Au Pair with respect and understanding, as you would do with your
    own family and friends.

·
It is in the best interest for both of you to establish the guidelines and expectations
at the beginning of your relationship.

·
Write down the Au Pair’s daily duties. Make clear the way you like things to be
   done.

·
Make clear the basic family rules, for example, to bring friends to the house, time
to come back home at night, etc.

·
Give the Au Pair the guidelines for the use of the telephone.

·
Make a list of all emergency telephone numbers (police, ambulance, fire dept., etc.).
As a Host Family, you are now involved in the health and security of your Au Pair.

·
Register your Au Pair with your family doctor.

·
At about three weeks talk with your Au Pair about how things have gone. If she
arises any problem to you, think how hard it should have been for her to do it.
Please, listen to her and try to solve the matter in the kindest way as possible.

·
Respect the Au Pair’s free time. Remember that she is young and she wants to have
fun and, if her staying with your family reduces only to work and classes, very soon
she will feel unhappy and will want to return home.
